My wife is getting her RE license. How long did it take you to study and pass exam?

Any tips that helped you? She recently ordered the books and likes them a lot better then reading the online material.

@John K. wow two weeks for results that is old school.. now a days at least in the states I have licneses once you hit submit.. the computer spits our your results.. some states its pass or fail some will give you how well you did.

Like on my NMLS mortgage banker test .. I got 72% so I am very happy I did not over train for that one. in Mississippi I was able to take the very abbreviated short test for a brokers licesne 14 questions. NO lie 14 questions it was more like a drivers test I aced that one LOL. good luck welcome to the industry its treated me well all these years and I owe 100% of what ever I have done to being in the game.

@Jay Hinrichs You would think this would be a standard, but it seems everything in New York can be backwards at times. I am anxious to get started and hope to be as successful as you one day!

Charles Smyler from Staten Island, New York

What is the yearly fee to hold the license in NY?

Sabi Const from New York, New York

Are there any requirements to getting the real estate license such as being sponsored by an agency or can anyone do it?

Wayne Brooks Real Estate Professional from West Palm Beach, Florida

9 days. 7 day, 63 hour course, review course next day, state test next day. No need to diddle around.

John K. Investor from Mahopac, New York

Once you are licensed in New York you are required to renew your license every two years if you wish to work as a real estate agent. This is done online, but must complete 22.5 hours of continuing education. You can read about this at

Yes there are requirements to getting a license. You can read about it in the link I provided above. Unless you have a felony or you are not of age you should be good to go. Just put in the time and effort of doing your research. Look up NYREI school which is located in Manhattan. They give you the option of taking it online which is what I did. So far it has been a smooth process, and will update you guys hopefully in two weeks when I pass!

I am a go getter, but that is overboard lol.

Sabi Const from New York, New York

@John K. thanks for the link. Interested if it helps getting it as a real estate investor for finding deals and then for selling.

Look forward to hearing that you passed :)

Nick Rutkowski Real Estate Professional from Cortland, New York

It took me 3 months to get my RE License in NY. Some helpful tips that got me past the exam was studying with other class mates. That was she can teach what she knows and learn what she doesn't know from her peers.

Good luck, us Realtors can't wait to welcome new people to the industry!

Magdalene Fortson from Fort Lauderdale, Florida

@James Setaro - I am sure it is state specific, however, in FL I had to take a 63 hour course and I opted to do the 7 day crash course which was 20 chapters long, then I was required to pass an in class exam before being allowed to move forward to the State Exam. I locked myself in for 80 hours to study and also invested in an online state exam simulator which was timed and allowed you up to 3 hours (just like our state exam) to be tested on math and others topics.

Like anything else in life, it requires dedication and discipline. You will get out of it what you put into it. It is not easy and we have about 10 versions of the state exam, so you never know if you will have an easy verison or the more complex one.

Eric Davey Real Estate Agent from Concord, North Carolina

It took me about 3 months. I took the night classes and studied every lunch break and every chance i could. Not much of a life besides reading, answering the questions in each chapter, taking practice tests, asking questions in class, ect. I passed my first time out because of all the studying and sacrifice of family time and leisure.

Deren Huang Real Estate Agent from Tulsa, Oklahoma

Personally, it took me a couple of months. But I was full time at another job.

I took the course while I held my full time job. That took 3 months.

Application to actually schedule the test, processing time took a couple weeks.

I scheduled my test 1 month out so that I could study for it.

After I passed my test, I interviewed a couple of brokers and took 1 month with my decision.

Signed and had to wait a couple of weeks before the processing went through to actually hang my license.

Then and only then can you sign up with NAR and your local realtor association to get the MLS.

How Long Does it Take to Become a Realtor?

Being a Realtor signifies membership in the National Association of Realtors (NAR), a professional association that adheres to a strict code of ethics. Becoming a Realtor is mandatory for real estate agents who work in a brokerage that is affiliated with NAR but it is not mandatory for a real estate brokerage to join NAR. While there is no test qualifying an agent for membership as a Realtor, he or she will undergo extensive training, testing and certification before receiving a license to sell real estate. The average time it takes to become a real estate agent is three months.

Today, NAR is a powerful association that had its meager beginnings in 1908, with a membership of just 120 people who were interested in forming an oversight group for the real estate industry. In the decades after its inception, the National Association of Realtors actively lobbied Congress in an effort to protect property owners from unscrupulous real estate practices. Over 1 million real estate agents are now members of NAR and, as such, they are Realtors.

The benefits of becoming a Realtor include representation by the Realtors Political Action Committee (RPAC), a powerful professional lobby that focuses on presenting information leading to congressional resolutions that benefit both Realtors and their clients. In addition, NAR offers vast educational opportunities in every state; classes their members must attend bi-annually in order to remain a Realtor in good standing.

The National Association of Realtors is responsible for adopting a high standard of ethical sales practices for its members and as a result, clients are entitled to expect a fair and honest transaction when buying or selling property. NAR legislation also affects real estate agents who do not choose to become Realtors, as their individual states adopt standards to which every real estate salesperson must comply. NAR has lobbied for, and gained, numerous anti-discrimination regulations, known as the Fair Housing Initiatives.

Before becoming a Realtor, a person must take a certified course in selling real estate and he must also pass two tests, one that covers real estate law at the federal level and the other that focuses on specific real estate policies set forth by the state in which he lives. Anyone may sign up for and take the basic course but he or she must identify with a specific real estate brokerage before taking the test. After passing the test, the new sales agent must join NAR if the real estate agency he works for is a member.

An ongoing misunderstanding among the general public is that all real estate agents are Realtors. The name has become a generic term, used to describe anyone who holds a real estate license. Approximately 85 percent of all real estate agents are Realtors.

How Long Does it Take to Get a Restricted License?

One of the most common issues after being convicted of a DWI in Virginia is getting a restricted license so you can drive to work, to school, to a doctor’s appointment, etc. The problem is, it can take a little while to get the restricted license in order, so one common question clients have is: how long will it take?

In most courts which I practice in, if you get convicted of DWI, to get a restricted license you have to do a couple things. First of all, you have to be sure all your fines and costs are paid. For a DUI conviction, you’re probably going to owe anywhere from $500 or more to the court, so you need that money available as soon as possible to pay your fines and costs. The next thing is, you have to surrender your current license to the court. And finally, you have to get the proper documents filed with the court to get them to issue a restricted license, assuming the judge has marked you as eligible for one.

With most of the courts I practice in, if you’re prepared to pay your fines and costs on the day of court and turn in your Virginia license, we can apply for a restricted license immediately (assuming your case is one where you’re eligible).

The courts differ about how long it takes to get that license issued, and it typically takes anywhere from one to three business days to get the license prepared. That’s the time for the clerks to review your paperwork, prepare the form, and have you come in to sign it, since you have to pick it up in person.

The one difference in this procedure is the Fredericksburg court where they only accept restricted license applications on Mondays and Wednesdays. However, they normally prepare them while you wait. But the problem can be that if you have court on Thursday, and you’re convicted of DWI, you will not get a restricted license in Fredericksburg until the following Monday. It can be a several-day wait if your case is on a Thursday.

As you can see, it can take, as little as a few hours in some cases when the clerks are not as busy. But I’d say on average it takes a couple business days to get your restricted license. However, be sure to note that this is assuming that you have your paperwork in order along with your fines and costs payment on the day of court. A delay in payment or a delay to gather the appropriate paperwork would delay getting your license. You don’t have to apply for it immediately, so if money is a problem, you can wait. However, you can’t drive until you get the restricted license in order.
